The Hubner Story

Hubner Seed was founded in January 1972, as a partnership between Robert L. Hubner, father, and Robert (Bob) Lee Hubner, son, with 54 years’ combined experience in seed production. The sole purpose of this partnership was to produce the best possible seed corn, at a reasonable price, for a regional retail customer base within 100 miles of West Lebanon, Indiana.

In 1981, Hubner Seed initiated a five-year building program that began with the construction of an ear-corn dryer. This program also added 70,000 bushels of bulk storage and a sheller building. Further plant expansion was done in 1989 with the construction of loading docks and an increase in the drying facility. After experiencing four droughts in 11 years, an irrigation system was installed in 1992, which put approximately 20% of the 1,747 production acres under water.

In 1993, the ear-corn receiving system was updated with the addition of new conveyors and two new husking beds. This increased the receiving capacity to bring it in line with the drying capacity. Also, 6,000 square feet of warehouse space was added. During this year, Hubner Seed began contracting acres to reduce risk and relieve some of the pressure on its harvest system.

In summary, Hubner Industries, LLC, was created in September 1995 to be the sizing, packaging, warehouse and distribution arm of the overall operation. Hubner Farms continues as the production arm, and Hubner Seed is the retail sales organization. Each of these entities is independent of each other, yet all remain under the operation supervision of the Hubner family, in its third generation with Bob's son, Doug, now serving an executive role as Hubner's Midwest Division Sales Manager.
